Health and Safety Policy for Cleaners West Hampstead
This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and procedures followed by Cleaners West Hampstead to protect the health, safety and welfare of our employees, subcontractors, clients and members of the public. Our aim is to provide a safe and healthy working environment for all cleaning activities carried out in homes, offices and other premises in and around West Hampstead.
Policy Statement
Cleaners West Hampstead is committed to managing its operations in a way that prevents injury and ill health and complies with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards. We will identify hazards, assess risks and implement effective controls to ensure that cleaning tasks are carried out safely and responsibly at every site we service.
Health and safety is an integral part of our planning, supervision and delivery of cleaning services. We continually review our arrangements and working methods to improve safety performance and promote a positive health and safety culture.
Responsibilities
The company management has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and ensuring that suitable resources are available to maintain safe systems of work. Management is responsible for:
Ensuring risk assessments and safe working procedures are in place and regularly reviewed. Providing appropriate training, information and supervision to all cleaners. Supplying and maintaining suitable personal protective equipment. Monitoring compliance with this policy through inspections and audits. Investigating accidents and incidents and implementing corrective actions.
All cleaners and other workers have a duty to:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Follow all safety instructions, training and site-specific rules. Use equipment, cleaning products and personal protective equipment correctly. Report hazards, accidents, near misses and unsafe conditions without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before undertaking cleaning work, we carry out risk assessments to identify potential hazards associated with tasks, equipment, chemicals and the working environment. Based on these assessments we establish safe systems of work, including method statements where necessary, to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Common risk areas assessed include slips, trips and falls, manual handling, working at height for tasks such as high-level dusting, use of electrical equipment, exposure to cleaning substances and lone working practices. Risk assessments are reviewed regularly and whenever there is a significant change to the work, equipment or premises.
COSHH and Use of Cleaning Substances
Many cleaning tasks involve the use of chemical products. Cleaners West Hampstead complies with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations. We obtain and retain safety data sheets for all hazardous products used and complete COSHH assessments where required.
Only approved cleaning agents are used, and they must always be stored, handled, diluted and applied in accordance with the manufacturer instructions and company training. Cleaners are instructed never to mix chemicals and to ensure adequate ventilation in areas where products are used. Where necessary, appropriate gloves, eye protection or other PPE are supplied and must be worn.
Training and Supervision
We provide induction and ongoing training for all cleaners to ensure they are competent to carry out their duties safely. Training includes general health and safety awareness, site-specific requirements, correct use of equipment and materials, manual handling techniques, safe use of ladders or step stools where applicable and emergency procedures.
Supervisors and managers monitor work practices, provide guidance and address any unsafe behaviours or conditions observed during site visits. Refresher training is delivered when procedures change or when monitoring identifies a need.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means, suitable personal protective equipment is provided free of charge. This may include protective gloves, masks or respirators for specific tasks, safety footwear with slip-resistant soles and eye protection where there is a risk of splashing.
Cleaners must use PPE as instructed, keep it in good condition and report any loss or damage so it can be replaced. PPE must not be altered or misused.
Safe Use of Equipment
All cleaning equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, floor machines and other electrical tools, is selected, used and maintained to minimise risk. Equipment is regularly inspected, tested and serviced as required. Cleaners are trained never to use damaged or defective equipment and to remove such items from service and report them immediately.
Cables must be routed to avoid trip hazards, and plug sockets and switches must be kept free from water and cleaning products. Extension leads are used only when necessary and must not be overloaded.
Manual Handling and Work Environment
Manual handling tasks such as moving equipment, waste or supplies are assessed and organised to minimise strain. Cleaners are trained in safe lifting and carrying techniques and encouraged to use trolleys or other aids where available. Heavy items should not be lifted alone and tasks should be broken down into manageable loads.
Work areas must be kept tidy, with walkways clear of obstructions, cables and spillages. Wet floors are to be clearly indicated with warning signs and dried as quickly as practicable to prevent slips.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergencies
All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported promptly to management. Details are recorded, investigated and used to improve procedures and prevent recurrence. Where necessary, incidents will be reported to the relevant enforcing authorities.
Cleaners must familiarise themselves with emergency arrangements at each client site, including fire exits, assembly points, alarms and the location of first aid facilities. In the event of an emergency, work must stop immediately and the site procedures must be followed.
Monitoring, Review and Policy Communication
We monitor our health and safety performance through site visits, inspections, feedback from cleaners and clients, and review of accident records. This policy and associated procedures are reviewed regularly and updated when changes in legislation, work activities or best practice occur.
The Health and Safety Policy is communicated to all employees and made available to clients on request. By following this policy, Cleaners West Hampstead aims to deliver reliable cleaning services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone affected by our work throughout the West Hampstead area.
